Symptoms of Selective Mutism:
Selective mutism is a complex childhood anxiety disorder characterized by a child’s inability to speak in select social settings, such as school. These children are able to talk normally in settings where they are comfortable, secure and relaxed. This disorder is quite debilitating and painful to the child. They fear speaking and social interactions where there are expectations to talk. They can become so anxious that they freeze, are expressionless, unemotional and can be socially isolated. Some children will display anxiety, depression, withdrawal, poor self-esteem, school refusal, or poor grades when left untreated.
Treatment of Selective Mutism:
Parent-child cognitive-behavioral treatment is an effective treatment for children and their families. Parents are involved in the treatment process to meet their child’s needs.
